Wayanad is a rural district in North Kerala in South India, where the nature’s beauty finds its real face with the union of Monsoon rain. Wayanad is one of the top tourism spots in entire India due to its mind blowing natural beauty. There are many places worth to watch in this Gods own country. Wayanad is ideal especially for Natural lovers, Monsoon rain lovers, families and Honeymoon couples. The main activities one can engaged in Wayanad is exploring its Natural life, a walk through the nature, trekking, tours through its plantations, a stay on the top of the trees with all modern facilities and camping.

Kalpetta is the district headquarters of Wayanad district. Mananthvady and Sulthan Bathery are other main towns in Wayanad.

How to reach Wayanad

By road: – Even though this is a hilly area, most of the cities in Kerala connected to Wayanad by road. The hair pin curved roads themselves are a great travel experience to the tourists.

By Rail: – Kozhikode is the nearest railway station to Wayanad which is away by around 90 Kilometers.

By air: – Kozhikode International airport (Karipur) is the nearest airport which is 100 Km away from Wayanad.

The below are some important places with tourist interest in Wayanad.

Soochipara Waterfalls

Soochi means needle and para means rock in Malayalam language. This waterfalls known by this name because a rock shaped as needle placed here. This is also known as Sentinel rock waterfalls. There are three tired waterfalls attract many tourists. This is a best photo shooting point and people can swim in the bed of the waterfalls. Trekking through the rocks and the scenery from the top most point is another attractions here.

Thirunelli Temple

Thirunelli Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu and known as the Kaashi of south India. Believed that Lord Brahma himself installed the idol of Lord Vishnu and the entire temple here. Situated near to Brahmagiri hills, other side of which another famous tourist spot Coorg situates, this temple is known for its natural beauty besides as a religious spot. You can see most of the time this temple surrounded by mist.

It is considered that there are seven holy water fountains in this temple named as 1. Papanasini, 2.Pancha thirtham, 3. Irnamochini thirtham, 4.Gunnika thirtham, 5.Sata vindu,6.Sahasra vindu,7. Varaham.

It is believed that if one perform rituals to their diseased relatives at Papanasini, their sole will get utmost eternity. The rituals taking place at a rock called Pindapara. There is a story behind this rock as below. Lord Vishnu killed a demon called Pazhanabhedi, at that time the death he prayed to Lord Vishnu that he has a last wish to fulfill. He wanted to convert his body into three parts and it should start from Tirunelli to Gaya(in Bihar) through Godavari( in Andhra) and his leg should be at Tirunelli, Middle part at Godavari and the head at Gaya.

Kuruva Island

Kuruva is an island by the river located in the middle of Kabani river. This island is a 950 acre protected river delta. It is an evergreen and thickest forest with still maintain its virginity from the pollution from outside world. The main attraction is the travel to the island through Kabani river on a boat made by Bamboo rafts. There are many hanging bridges made by Bamboo rafts can see throughout this place. Natural lovers are often made their presence here to watch and explore the pure environment and watch its different types of plants, animals and birds. It is also a famous trekking place.

Entry is restricted in the rainy season from June to September. Due to a Kerala High court verdict, the access to this place is closed by the authorities now. So please check before planning to go here.

Pookode Lake

One of the most preferred tourist spots in Wayanad, this is a beautiful fresh water lake with 13 acre vast and 40m deep. Panamaram river which is a tributary to Kabani river is originating from here.

The boating at Pookode lake is a mind blowing experience and especially between the thick forest is a good experience to the tourists. Pedal boats are available here. There is a mini aquarium, a shopping center for bamboo and coconut products and a children park available near this lake. These are managed by District Tourism development Council.

Another attraction is the wild animals and birds can see in and around the lake.Another interesting feature for this lake is its appearance and the similarity with the geographical map of India.

Edakkal Caves

Edakkal caves is a place situating 1200 meters above sea level in Ambukutty hills enroute to ancient trade route between Mysore and Malabar coast through dense forest and mountains. This caves discovered by Fred Fawcett in 1890. There are many carvings on the rocks which belongs to Stone age between 4000BC to 1700BC. This is the only such findings in south India. There are very clear carvings on the rocks which is a great tool for the archaeology students and researchers.

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary or Wayanad wild life sanctuary is a must see spot in Wayanad tourism map. This located 20 Km east of Mananthawady on the way to Kodagu. The main attraction is the jeep safari through the sanctuary and on the way you can see herds of elephants, guars, deer, monkeys, fish, tigers, leopards, bear, reptiles, butterflies, vultures, slendon Loris and Indian bison.

Phantom Rock

Phantom Rock is an archaeological important place where the rock shaped in the form of the face(skull) of a phantom. This is near Ambalavayal and best time to watch this place is rainy season. The quarry work carrying out near this place make vulnerable to view in summer season due to the sound and dust issues. The panoramic view from the side of the phantom rock also worth for watching. It is a great place for people who loves history. This place is known as Cheengeri Hill.

Chethalayam waterfalls

Chethalayam waterfalls located near Sultan Bathery and also near to the famous Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary. It is a great spot to spend time with friends and family. It is a real refreshing experience with the natural beauty and splendid scenery around the waterfalls. Also this is a good place to take some charming photographs to memorize the trip.

Pazhassi Tomb

Kerala varma pazhassi raja known as Kerala Lion who is one of the rare personalities in the entire history of the world who defeated British in a war. He was famous for his guerilla war strategies. He fought with sword, bow and arrows against the rifles, arms and ammunition of British troop. But still he won in the initial war against British. With the help of some fellow Indians, british succeeded to kill Pazhassi Raja. But his life and struggle is still a great bravery to the generations to come.

In the Pazhassi Tomb we can see his sword, ancient coins and other valuable items which was in the possession with Pazhassi Raja. His tomb converted into a museum at present and it is maintained by Kerala Archaeological department. The Pulpalli caves also near to this place where he was used as a hiding place before found and killed by British.

Banasura Hills

Banasura Hills is a fantastic treat to your eyes with beautiful green meadow and the valley. The glorious Meenmutty Waterfalls and Banasura sagar dam can view from this area. This is an ideal winter trekking spot for those who are interested to do so. Banasura Hills is one of the highest mountain ranges in the entire western Ghat. Boating is another activity you can perform in Banasura Hills. Boating is another activity which can be a great pleasure activity.

Arippara Waterfalls

Arippara waterfalls is another stunning attraction in Wayanad where one can view the waterfalls amidst of thick greenery. Tourists can swim the bottom bed of the waterfalls which will refresh both mind and body with its cool and fresh water. 1400ft above the sea level, this has 6 different levels of waterfalls. They are Sullu Kallu, Vattakuzhi, Nirannapara, Olichuchattam, Swasakkuzhi, Neelakkaya thadaakam. Nirannapara in Malayalam means “flat rock” where the water spreads by 1200 sq feet area and from this the water falls to Swasakkuzhi which is a great experience to watch.

Kanthanpara Waterfalls

Wayanad has many waterfalls to see, compare to others Kanthanpara is small with an altitude of 30 m. But this is easy to access compare to other waterfalls. Along and difficult walk(or trekk?) required to reach other waterfalls. This is surrounded by lush greenery and due to its plain surface, apt for camping activities. The roads are odd nature and driving should be with care in this part of the world.

Wayanad Heritage Museum

One of the important museums in Kerala, this flashes light to the history of Wayanad. Many ornaments and accessories kept here to spread information to the students who interested to know about the past life in this part of the world. The items stored here goes till 2nd century. This located near the famous Edakkal caves.

The exhibited items includes 14th to 16th century sculptures, potteries of Megalithic Age, hunting equipments, clay sculptures and. Idols made of hard and soft rocks, which were believed to be worshipped by the ancient people too can be seen in the museum. Also this is the apt place to study about the lives of tribal population lived in wayanad.

The collections exhibited in 04 different blocks according to its nature. They are Veerasmruthi, Gothrasmruthi, Devasmruthi and Jeevanasmruthi. There is a multi media theatre to describe more informations to the visitors.

Thusharagiri Waterfalls

This is a must visit place if you visit Wayanad. Meaning of Thusharagiri is ” snow-caped mountain”. Thusharagiri waterfalls is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Wayanad. Apart from tourism, its importance is increasing as a centre for water sports activities including white water kayaking. Recently Kerala Government conducted Malabar River Festival to enhance the sports which is participated foreign tourists also.

The Waterfalls comprises three different layers named Erattamukku, Mazhavilchattom and thenpara. Thenpara waterfalls has an altitude of 75 meters. Trekking activities starting from Thusharagiri to Vythiri especially the rock climbing is very famous among the trekking community.

Bamboo forest

A jeep safari through Muthanga wild life sanctuary is a mesmerising experience to those who like eco tourism. You can drive through bamboo forests on both sides. Bamboo is a unavoidable object for the tribals living in Wayanad. They are making different types of crafts using bamboo, a boat made with bamboo rafts are so common in Wayanad, a type of rice getting from bamboo is common food ingredient in Wayanad. The Bamboo forest is extended upto Nilgiri biosphere reserve where you can see many animals like elephant, tiger, deer , monkey,cheetah and wild bear.

Pakshipathalam is a bird sanctuary as well as a famous trekking site. Pakshi means bird and pathalam means world of demons in malayalam language. This is a hill area and the other side of the hill belongs to Karnataka state and it known as Brahmagiri Mountain ranges. Pakshipathalam is considered as the place where the King of birds, “Garuda” and his fellow birds lived as per Hindu mythology. This is a best place for ornithologists to see the number of birds by using their binoculars. Trekking can be done approximately 15 Km through this place.

There is a munikal caves which believed that these caves used by sacred saints in the olden ages.

Best season to visit:- October to February
Remarks:- It is situated around 1740 m above sea level. Opening hours will be 6.00 AM to 6.00 PM. There is an entrance fee to get inside the site.


Karappuzha Dam

Karappuzha Dam is located across Karapuzha river and it is one of the biggest dam in Kerala. This is an earthen dam and main attractions are boating in the lake, Natural walk on the dam site, Viewing the fresh water aquarium. Its calm water and natural beautiful surroundings makes this as a great picnic spot.

Meenmutty Waterfalls

The site can be reached by 2Km walk in the jungle but one can say easily that the walk is worth by the beautiful sight of waterfall from 1000 ft height. This waterfall is undoubtedly the best waterfall in Wayanad with water falling as three ducks. This located in between Wayanad – Ooty road. The thick wild forest is increasing the wild behaviour of waterfall. Vast scenery can be viewable from the third viewpoint including Banasura sagar Dam. Most of the time waterfall remains closed, So it is important to coordinate with the authority for the timing before seeing this prime location. This is another important trekking point in Wayanad.

Lakkidi View point

Lakkidi view point is often known as the Gateway of Wayanad as this is the end of 9 hairpin curved road from Adivaram to Lakkidi, which is also known as Thamarasseri churam(mountain pass). Lakkidi is 5 km way from vythiri town. This famous view point is located 700 meters above from the sea level. From this point one can view the beautiful landscape with both sides having rivers and in between mountains and hills.

Lakkidi is receiving 600 cm rain in a year which is the second highest in the world and its misty environment makes it an unforgettable tourist place in Wayanad.

Jain Temple

Jain Temple in Wayanad is built in 13th century by the Vijayanagar dynasty. This was a famous pilgrim centre that time with many jain visitors gathered on special occasions. Tipu sulthan invaded this area and he made this as his ammunition store(Battery) and in the present era this place know for this incident as Sulthan Bathery.

The pillars are made with granite and there are many carvings can see in the pillars. Even now this is considered as one of the main centre for jains in India and celebrations happening in connection with Mahavir Jayanti every year.

This jain temple under Archeological survey of India at present and it is well maintaining for the future generations.

Chembra peak

Chembra peak is the highest point in the Wayanad hill range with a height of 2100 meter from the sea level. This is a paradise for the natural lovers and trekking fans with its heart breaking beauty .  It is the highest and the largest peak in western Ghats of India in between Nilgiris and Himalaya exceeding 2,000m . Visits to this peak organized by ‘the Chempra Peak VSS’ under the control of South Wayanad Forest Development Agency, guides are provided for trekking. District Tourism Promotion Council provides guides and trekking equipment on hire charges to tourists.

There are many tea plantations near to the peak. There is a small lake which is known as ” Cupid Lake” with the shape of a heart. Tourist can vie the Banasura Sagar dam from this peak.

Banasura sagar Dam

Named after Banasura who was the son of famous king ruled Kerala, Mahabali. This is the largest earthen dam in India and second largest in Asia. Banasura sgar dam is the foot for the Banasura hills. The reservoir surrounded by dense forest and valleys makes this a special attraction for tourists. There is a small garden to play aimed mainly for children and boating in the lake with the use of speed boat and pedal boats. Trekking to the peak of Banasura hills is another important activity happening here.

Banasura resort which BBC mentioned s the biggest earthen resort in Aisa is located near to the dam. Also few temples like Nirur shiva temple , ayyappa temple and Shri Nath Mandir located near to the dam site.

  1. Wayanad is a semi-hill station of “God’s Own Country” The places of wayanad seems actually very amazing. I haven’t visited Wayanad yet, though i have been to Kerala many times. But I have heard so much about the wayanad and i am surely visiting this place in my next trip to Kerala. Thank you so much for adding some amazing new places to visit in wayanad. One thing i wanted to ask you that i have a one habit that i bought one monument of every place i visit, on that note could you please tell me which thing i must buy form Wayanad?


    1. Wayanad is well known for their tribal population which have a long tradition. They are specialists to make handicrafts with bamboo. Bamboo, undoubtedly we can say giving bread and butter for locals here including tribals. I can suggest you a handicraft shop named “URAVU” which is helping tribals to sell thier hand made handicrafts. You can visit and buy which will help them who are very poor. The address giving below
